And, as far as the intro goes, it was inspired by someone else’s, so I can’t take much credit if you find you appreciate it.

Yes, depending. There are some crimes it would be ridiculous to restrict gun ownership for having committed. Likewise some mental illnesses.

As far as felons, I’ll grant that most reluctantly. If we don’t trust them with a gun, why are they on the street in the first place? I can’t think of a crime bad enough that I’d agree with restricting someone’s right to bear arms wherein the convict should be on the street anyway.

I’m on the extreme, radical, far-far-right wing, utterly loony spectrum when it comes to crime. I’m strongly in favor of a biblical standard for criminal justice, where the only punishments for criminal behavior are restitution, corporal punishment or execution. And under that system those convicts for whom I wouldn’t quibble about rights to gun ownership would be all dead. And there wouldn’t be that many of them, either. Practically none.

Likewise the mentally ill. Simply put, if they’re sane enough to be on the street then there’s no excuse for depriving them of any rights whatsoever. Conversely, if they’re crazy enough that their rights should be abridged, then they shouldn’t be on the street.

I think I generally agree, but I’d like your comments on one scenario. That dude that shot up Virginia Tech a couple of years ago had been declared psychologically unstable by a licensed psychologist, and then went and bought two guns (separated by a one-month waiting period) and went and blew the heck out of a bunch of college students. Should the gun rights of 1) felons, or 2) the mentally unsound, be restricted, in your view?

Mr. Gates was given the opportunity before the campus police arrived, to provide proof of who he was, and did he live there. He was assualting the house in a violent fashion, because he had lost or fogoten the keys. He chose not to and make a scene in public. Hewas railing the officer the wholetime ” that you are a racicst! He had lost or forgotten the key, and was breaking in to his own home. Not a crime, but when asked to prove he lived there, no proof delivered to the officer. What was the officer to do at this piont? He waited for the campus police to comeand confirm the “Campus Proffessor” lived there. The whole time putting up with a screamiing and insulting man, accusing him of racism. (No proof of residence provided yet). When the campus police got there, Mr. Gates decided he could pull out his wallet and show his drivers license. Then continue the tirade about the officer being a racist, now that he had a crowd to watch. Nice perfomance! The officer arrested him for public miscondut, not breking and entering. The officer has gave “Mouth to Mouth” to a current BLACK NBA player. He did his job, and did it well! Mr. Gates is the “Colledge Professer” who isa racist. CLEARLY!!!!!
